Community Ownership Driving Sustainable Water Solutions in Muzaffargarh

Community Ownership in Action — A Success Story from Muzaffargarh With Support of AGAHE & WHH, In Basti Jalal Abad, Jaggat Pur, Muzaffargarh the journey toward safely managed drinking water has become a powerful example of how communities can transform their own future. The Upscaling WASH System Strengthening in Pakistan has not only introduced a Safely Managed Drinking Water Sustainable Service-Delivery Model—it has inspired true community ownership.
Local Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) have become the backbone of this model. Their chairman, members, and especially the youth WASH champions have taken charge of the renovation, operation, and day-to-day maintenance of the water filtration plant. Their active participation reflects a deep sense of responsibility for safeguarding their community’s access to safe drinking water.
What makes this story truly inspiring is the collective spirit—elders and youth working side by side, ensuring that the plant remains functional, resilient, and sustainable for the long term. This community-driven approach strengthens trust, builds local capacity, and keeps the system running efficiently without external dependence.
This model is more than infrastructure—it is a living example of how empowered communities can uphold Sustainable Development Goal 6 by protecting their own water systems for future generations. Basti Jalal Abad stands today as a testament to what community ownership can achieve.
A sustainable water filtration plant… a healthier community… and a stronger, united future.
